Pete Tong Discovers Next Big Dance Music Talent

16 janv. 2025
SweetNSour Magazine

Legendary DJ and tastemaker Pete Tong has a knack for spotting future stars, and his latest discovery, FR3ADY, is no exception. The 26-year-old German DJ and producer, born Frederic Rappenecker, has quickly become one of the most talked-about new talents in electronic music. FR3ADY’s big break came when he won Pete Tong’s prestigious remix competition with his rendition of “Release Me,“ a track co-produced by Tong, Paul Harris, Jules Buckley, and Poppy Baskomb. The win secured him a slot at Tong’s iconic Ibiza Classics show at London’s O2 Arena, where he performed in front of 16,000 fans—a life-changing moment for the young artist. FR3ADY’s success didn’t happen overnight. The classically trained musician honed his craft at the Abbey Road Institute and gained recognition for his Rooftop Tapes events, which showcased his ability to blend deep house, melodic techno, and experimental sounds. His unique style caught Tong’s attention during the DJ Academy’s Future Talent Awards, where he won first place. “FR3ADY is the real deal,” Tong said in a recent interview. “He has the technical skills, the musicality, and the charisma to go far in this industry.” Looking ahead, FR3ADY has a busy schedule, with bookings at major festivals and plans to release his debut EP in mid-2025. He credits Pete Tong and the Ibiza Classics team for giving him the platform to showcase his talent to a global audience. “This is just the beginning,” FR3ADY said. “I’m so grateful for the opportunity and can’t wait to share more music with the world.” With Pete Tong’s endorsement and a growing fanbase, FR3ADY is undoubtedly a name to remember in the coming years.

Pete Tong interview: ‘We bought so many Budweisers that we had to store them in the bath

The Times

My honeymoon was cut short by a gig. So it’s not surprising that one of my wife’s biggest complaints is that work interferes with our holidays. After I played Ibiza last year, we decided to have two weeks of proper time off. We flew to Madrid for a road trip, driving from Toledo to San Sebastian and Bilbao, then across the border to La Co(o)rniche, the Philippe Starck-designed hotel in Pyla-sur-Mer, France. We were next door to the tallest sand dune in Europe — it was like having the Sahara on our doorstep. I’ve spent part of every summer in Ibiza for almost 30 years. The early days were so laid-back. It was a little, off-the-radar island where people would dance on the beach until the sun came up. It’s very different these days — it’s global. One year, I was playing there for the whole summer and had to take a private jet to and from the UK for 18 weeks straight. I’d rush up to Luton airport from London with my takeaway sushi, and return after the weekend. I’m not looking for sympathy, but the plane was actually quite cramped. I’m not famous or wealthy enough to have made it into the Gulfstream G700 set. Maybe one day, eh? Growing up, I was never scared about being away from home. When I was 10, I set sail with my school, which was near Rochester, Kent, on an “educational” cruise that took us to Venice, Israel, Sicily and Portugal. It’s a grainy memory, but I remember a group of us standing beside the Western Wall and visiting the Garden of Gethsemane in Jerusalem. Looking back, it was crazy to be let loose at that age, but it was the most exciting thing that had ever happened to me. Unfortunately, the return leg wasn’t enjoyable — the Bay of Biscay was rough and everyone threw up. Family holidays were closer to home. We usually went to Broadstairs or Whitstable, but Mum upped the stakes one year with Caister-on-Sea, near Great Yarmouth. It was a proper English holiday — we stayed in a caravan, ate fish and chips, and argued over bunk beds. I remember us driving on the long roads through Essex, the arcades in Great Yarmouth and the huge ships in the harbour. When I started DJing, we did a soul weekender in Caister-on-Sea and the drive up gave me a shiver of recognition. After I left school, the only place I wanted to go was America. All the music I loved — from James Brown to Disco Tex and the Sex-O-Lettes — was born there. In 1980, a mate and I got a Laker Airways flight to New York for £99 each. We stayed at the Sheraton, just off Broadway, and did all the tourist stuff, like the Empire State Building. But it was in the evening that New York really came alive — the record stores, the music, the clubs. It was so different from the UK. Even going to the supermarket for beer felt different. We’d never seen Budweiser, and we bought so many cans that we had to store them in the bath. Travel has changed so much — it’s become so easy. I have flown out to Shanghai and Australia for gigs, and the routine was plane, cab, food, do the show, sleep for a couple of hours and get back on the plane. But there are still places that require a bit of effort, and I like that. About 10 years ago, I went to Boracay, in the Philippines, and it was quite a trek. We had to take two flights and a boat. None of that mattered when I saw the hotel. We had a detached villa with its own bit of private beach. There’s nothing like falling asleep to the sound of the ocean. Whenever I go away with my wife, she looks after the music. It’s nice not to have to think about it. It makes the holiday more enjoyable. Pete Tong, 59, is one of the biggest names in British dance music. After DJing in his home county, Kent, he landed a show on BBC Radio 1 in 1991. This year, he presented his first Radio 2 show, Pete Tong’s House Nation. His latest album, Pete Tong & the Heritage Orchestra: Chilled Classics, is out now. He lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Carolina
