Full bio

Stefan Hernandez is a Romanian-American DJ, co-founder and resident of MILKollektiv whose relationship with electronic music was shaped on the dancefloors of early-2000s New York.

After arriving in New York in 1998, he became immersed in a club culture defined by places such as Arc, Roxy and Twilo and by artists including Danny Tenaglia and Peter Rauhofer. Those years became his underground education — shaping not only his musical taste, but his understanding of what a dancefloor can represent. You can see Hernandez standing next to Tenaglia’s white horse at the 28 hours Arc’s Closing Party

Once relocated back to Europe he started travelling few times a year to Berlin, where he became a frequent clubgoer to the best clubs Berlin has to offer. And after a long period away from the decks, Stefan returned to DJing in 2023 with a different perspective: less interested in recreating the past than translating decades of dancefloor experience into something contemporary. He held a residency at Don’t Tell Mom, an all-male party, as well as Daddy Knows party in Shelter Bucharest.

Rather than relying on constant drops or overly melodic structures, his sets are built progressively: rolling low-end, tight percussion, repetitive hypnotic elements and darker textures gradually increase the pressure on the dancefloor. His musical direction sits between contemporary groove techno, hypnotic techno and harder late-night material, allowing him to move from restrained, tension-building selections into more physical peak-time territory without losing continuity.

In 2024, he co-founded MILKollektiv in Bucharest together with a great friend who’s lived in Germany for a long time, combining DJing with a wider ambition to create the kind of inclusive, community-driven dancefloor that first made him fall in love with club culture.

Hernandez also created the MILK Tickets Solidarity Program, offering complimentary tickets to people experiencing financial hardship and encouraging those who can afford it to support someone else's night out. It is an extension of the philosophy behind MILKollektiv: the dancefloor should be accessible to everyone, regardless of financial circumstances. His sound moves between house and techno, increasingly gravitating toward hypnotic, driving and groove-led techno, while retaining the musicality and sense of journey inherited from his New York years.

Through MILKollektiv, Stefan is also involved in building an independent platform for electronic music in Bucharest, connecting local artists, international guests and audiences around club-focused techno. For Stefan, a DJ set is less about individual tracks and more about creating a continuous atmosphere — one groove evolving into the next until the room becomes part of it. Twenty-five years after discovering the dancefloor, Stefan isn't trying to relive New York. He's building what comes next.
