Born in Quito and raised in Madrid, he learned as a child to live between two worlds. When he returned to Ecuador he found what he was missing: the Andean and jungle roots that now beat in each set. From Spicy Sounds — his studio in Madrid — he builds a sound that doesn't need to choose which side he's on. MAKAAL is a DJ and producer. They call it the Rhythm Operator because that's exactly what it does: operate the rhythm with the precision of someone who knows where the wires are and what happens if you touch them. His sets have no formula: they are long ceremonies where the dance floor ceases to be a dance floor and becomes something else. Digital cumbia, global bass, psychedelic chicha, zapateo. It doesn't mix genres: it connects worlds. Bass that come from within. Percussions that remind you of something you didn't know you had forgotten. He has been moving tracks between two continents for more than a decade. Among its stops: London Remixed Festival, Zodiak Brussels, Jungle Groove Ecuador, Sala Villanos Madrid. Before that, he was a resident at the Café Democrático in Quito, where the Ecuadorian underground was cooking before it had a name. European underground with the soul of the Andes. What sounds in their sets has roots, groove and attitude. The rest is told by the clue. You know.
