Four Tet is the long-running solo project of London producer, composer and DJ Kieran Hebden. Born in Putney in 1977 to a British father and an Indian mother, he grew up immersed in the city's record shops, pirate radio and club culture, and co-founded the post-rock band Fridge as a teenager before launching Four Tet in 1998. His restless, sample-led approach fuses hip-hop, jazz, folk, IDM and electronic textures into music that sidesteps the conventional pop format. His second album, Pause (2001, Domino), saw the press coin the term "folktronica," and 2003's Rounds became a landmark of experimental electronic music, followed by Everything Ecstatic (2005) and There Is Love in You (2010). Alongside his own records, Hebden built a reputation as a prolific remixer and collaborator, working with Burial and Thom Yorke on "Ego"/"Mirror," recording improvisational albums with jazz drummer Steve Reid, and arranging Madlib's Sound Ancestors. Through his own Text Records imprint, Hebden has increasingly bridged the headphone and the dancefloor, becoming a major festival and club draw and touring with artists like Skrillex and Fred again.. His twelfth album, Three, arrived in March 2024 and topped the UK Dance Albums chart, moving between crackly IDM, ambient ballads and weightless house. He remains one of electronic music's most consistently inventive and independent figures, continuing to release new material and DJ mixes into 2025 and 2026.
