Full bio

DJ Mavel is a Spanish DJ and producer based in Amsterdam, six years into a career that began in Madrid with a record bag and a Sunday-afternoon slot nobody wanted.

He learned the craft on vinyl, and it still shapes the way he plays. Two turntables, a mixer, and whatever he could carry taught him to commit to a record and live with the consequences, the timing, the patience, the sense that a set is a conversation and not a playlist. Today he plays hybrid: control vinyl alongside CDJs, loops and edits prepared in the studio, drum machines running underneath when the room can take it.

His first residency came in Madrid, a full season at a club where he played every register the night asked for: deep house and acid jazz early, Detroit techno and electro by two, breakbeat and hard groove when the floor stopped negotiating. That year taught him to read a room in real time. In 2023 he moved to Amsterdam for a residency at an after-hours party, and the shift north sharpened everything longer sets, later hours, a crowd that expects to be taken somewhere rather than entertained. He now plays and records as part of a collective that programs its own nights across the city.

Musically, he works between 125 and 145 BPM, but the range matters less than the movement inside it. He builds from 90s techno, Detroit grooves, raw acid lines, electro chassis and pushes it into contemporary territory with breakbeat, hard groove, and minimal techno textures. The reference points are political as much as sonic: Underground Resistance and the idea that dance music can carry a position, the Love Parade and the scale of what a crowd can become, the early Berlin clubs that turned empty buildings into permanent Fridays. He is not interested in nostalgia. He is interested in what those records were trying to do, and whether it still works on a floor in these times.

More recently he has begun building a live show, experimenting with hardware synthesizers, sequencers, and drum machines to perform his own material without a laptop safety net. It is a work in progress and he talks about it that way early versions have appeared in warm-up slots and smaller rooms, where mistakes are cheap and the payoff is a set that can only happen once.

As a producer he releases sparingly, favoring tracks built for function over tracks built for streaming: long intros, real drums, and enough space for another DJ to do something with them.

Selected venues include Tresor West and Tresor Globus, fabric in London, Human at Razzmatazz in Barcelona, Mondo Disko and Cadavra in Madrid, La Machine du Moulin Rouge in Paris, and Shelter and Radion in Amsterdam.
