Harvey William Bassett, known to the world as DJ Harvey, is a legendary English DJ and producer whose career spans over four decades. Renowned for his incredibly eclectic taste, he effortlessly blends house, disco, garage, and rock, earning a reputation as one of the most influential figures in underground dance music.
Born in London, Harvey's musical journey began far from the dancefloor. At just 13 years old, he joined the Cambridge-based punk band Ersatz as a drummer. His transition to DJing was sparked during a pivotal trip to New York City in 1985. Immersing himself in the city's hip-hop scene and iconic clubs like the Paradise Garage, Harvey was inspired to buy his first turntables. He viewed mixing breaks as a natural extension of his drumming background and soon began introducing American garage and disco sounds to the United Kingdom.
In the late 80s and early 90s, Harvey formed the Tonka Sound System, throwing legendary warehouse and beach parties that fused electro, disco, and early house music. By 1991, he launched his acclaimed weekly club night, "Moist," at London's Gardening Club, frequently bringing over pioneering US talent like Larry Levan. This success led to a prominent residency at the Ministry of Sound, cementing his influence with the seminal 1996 mix compilation Late Night Sessions.
Production Monikers and Global Influence Beyond the decks, DJ Harvey is a prolific producer and editor. Alongside Gerry Rooney, he co-founded the legendary Black Cock label, creating pioneering leftfield disco re-edits. He has explored diverse sonic territories under aliases like Locussolus, as part of the disco-rock duo Map of Africa, and fronting his own band, Wildest Dreams, where he writes and plays the instruments.
Modern Residencies and Legacy Harvey continues to shape global club culture. He holds a renowned summer residency, "Mercury Rising," at the iconic Pikes Hotel in Ibiza. Recently, he expanded his global footprint by co-designing the Klymax Discotheque in Bali, focusing on acoustic perfection and the holistic clubbing experience. His vast contributions to the industry were formalized when he received the Outstanding Contribution Award at the DJ Awards in Ibiza. Whether scoring films, playing marathon all-night sets, or collecting vintage hi-fi gear and motorcycles, DJ Harvey remains a purist driven by a deep love for rhythm and communal euphoria. As Rolling Stone declared, he truly is "the Keith Richards of dance music".
