Full bio

Diplo — born Thomas Wesley Pentz on November 10, 1978, in Tupelo, Mississippi — is one of the most restless, genre-defying, and culturally consequential figures in the history of modern popular music. A DJ, producer, songwriter, and label founder, he has spent over two decades dismantling the boundaries between electronic music, hip-hop, dancehall, pop, and global sounds — consistently arriving ahead of the curve and dragging the mainstream with him.

His career began in the underground, DJing nightclubs and developing an insatiable appetite for music that lived outside genre conventions. After studying at Temple University and the University of Central Florida, Diplo relocated to Philadelphia, where he built his reputation through the Hollertronix parties — legendary nights that blended hip-hop, crunk, and global bass music in ways that felt completely new. It was there that his ear for cross-cultural fusion first took shape.

His collaboration with M.I.A. proved to be his first major international breakthrough. The New York Times recognised their mixtape Piracy Funds Terrorism Vol. 1 as one of the best albums of its year, cementing his reputation as a producer capable of amplifying voices from the margins of global music. Their ongoing creative relationship culminated in the Grammy-nominated "Paper Planes" (2008), which reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and introduced Diplo to a worldwide audience. thesparkspost nationaltoday

In 2006, he founded Mad Decent — a record label that would become one of the defining tastemaker imprints of the following decade, home to artists across EDM, dancehall, trap, and beyond. Two years later, he co-founded Major Lazer, an electronic dancehall project that fused Caribbean-inspired rhythms with rave culture and toured the globe as a live sound system. Major Lazer's "Lean On" featuring MØ became the most-streamed song of the 2010s, accumulating over 2.4 billion Spotify plays. grokipedia

His ability to build world-class creative partnerships became one of his defining qualities. In 2015, he teamed up with Skrillex to form Jack Ü, whose collaboration with Justin Bieber — "Where Are Ü Now" — earned a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording. In 2018, he launched Silk City alongside Mark Ronson, producing "Electricity" with Dua Lipa, which earned a second Grammy. The supergroup LSD, formed with Sia and Labrinth in 2019, added a third dimension to his already sprawling portfolio.

Beyond his group projects, Diplo's production credits read like a map of the last two decades of popular music: Beyoncé, Madonna, Justin Bieber, M.I.A., Usher, and dozens more. His production discography spans over 800 credits across platforms, incorporating Brazilian baile funk, Jamaican dancehall, trap, and country into a body of work that refuses any single definition. grokipedia

His willingness to push into unexpected territory extended to his Thomas Wesley series — a country-crossover project released in two chapters (2020 and 2023) under his birth name, proving that his creative curiosity had no stylistic ceiling. His self-titled Diplo album (2022) returned to house and electronic music, and in 2026 he released D00mscrvll, continuing to evolve his sound into new territory.

As a live performer, Diplo is a force of nature — a headliner at festivals across the world including Ultra, Coachella, and Lollapalooza, known for sets that are equal parts DJ performance, party, and cultural spectacle. Through Mad Decent's annual block parties, he built a festival brand as distinctive and beloved as his music.

Multiple Grammy wins, billions of streams, and collaborations spanning every corner of popular culture — Diplo remains one of the few artists capable of operating simultaneously at the underground and the mainstream, always moving, always searching, always a step ahead.
