Hey y’all I’m Brian, a DJ that goes by the name of Chub and co-founder of THAT’S WHAT’S UP.
I’ve had a close relationship with music since I was a kid. I grew up in New Jersey playing classical and jazz music on the trombone all the way through college, but that never stopped me from exploring other genres of music - EDM, hip-hop, trap, rnb, indie rock/pop, funk to name a few… To this day, I think I still search for that feeling of listening to your new favorite song for the first time and having it scratch a certain part of your brain.
I picked up DJing about a year and a half ago to take a break from music production. I never expected to gain a whole new perspective on how to appreciate music. My experience with DJing in NYC has been one of music discovery and community. The nature by which one amasses a repertoire of tracks as a DJ forces you to look high and low for new music. In doing so, I’ve been exposed to so so much more music in the last year alone than the last few years of my life in the Spotify matrix.
I’ve found the music/DJ community in the NYC to be simultaneously uplifting and generous. The people I’ve met and befriended in this space all want to see you win and have all been eager to put me on to their favorite IDs. For that I have nothing but gratitude for improving my experience as a humble listener of music. As a DJ, the greatest feeling for me is when someone asks me after a set about a song/remix I played and I get to share what I too have been shared with or discovered on my own. As such, my goal with THAT’S WHAT’S UP is to create a space where people can come in with an open mind and maybe find a new song/remix/style of music that they didn’t know before and walk away having gained a deeper love for music.
Follow my journey to find your new favorite song on the dance floor.
