Biography: Cem Orlow Cem Orlow is a DJ, producer, and curator whose musical roots span over three decades. Having shaped and been shaped by the raw electronic underground of Berlin for over 25 years, he has now relocated his base to Ibiza, where he channels the island's deep vinyl culture, digs for rare sounds, and continues to evolve his atmospheric, hypnotic signature style. Current Base: Ibiza & The "Ibiza Phantasy" Era After a long and defining chapter in Berlin, Cem Orlow moved his focus and life to the Balearic island of Ibiza. Far removed from the commercial, big-room mainstream, he has fully immersed himself in the island's authentic underground culture: • The "Ibiza Phantasy" Project: The deep inspirations gathered on the island flow into his multi-part, extended mix series Ibiza Phantasy (The Resonance of Souls, The Alchemy of Life, The Awakening of a New Mind, Believe in Me). These sets reflect a sophisticated blend of Deep House, Micro House, and Chicago Acid House. • Vinyl Digging in Sant Jordi: The town of Sant Jordi (near the airport) is a crucial hub for his sound. The legendary weekly flea market at the racetrack (Hipódromo) serves as his regular goldmine for digging up rare second-hand vinyl, classic Balearic gems, and obscure electronic rarities. • WAX Ibiza Instore Sessions: His connection to the local scene culminates in intimate analog gigs, such as his exclusive live instore sessions at the renowned record store WAX Ibiza in San Antonio, celebrating the culture of vinyl within a close-knit circle of music lovers. The Berlin Era (1997 – Recent Years): Club Institutions & Curation In 1997, Cem Orlow moved to Berlin, where he became an integral part of the city's evolving electronic music landscape across multiple eras: • Club Legacy: His deep, hypnotic sound opened the doors to Berlin’s most prestigious and legendary venues. He played at Ostgut (the iconic predecessor to Berghain), Tresor, Maria am Ostbahnhof, Golden Gate, and was a regular guest at the Sasomo events in KaterHolzig. • HighFilet-Party & Radio: In 2003, he launched his own ongoing event series, HighFilet-Party, serving as the resident DJ. He also hosted a dedicated radio show on Berlin’s cult station Twen FM and shared the decks with scene heavyweights like Zip, Andre Galluzzi, Daniel Wang, and Losoul. • RTS.FM Berlin Curation: He took over the relaunch and artistic curation for the Berlin broadcasts of the international streaming platform RTS.FM. Operating out of Café at Marla / Marla Records in Berlin-Kreuzberg, he provided a live-stream platform for both established international acts and fresh local talent. • Productions: During this era, his first original productions were released, including the Lightfield EP (2015, Soundscapes Records) and Momentum Island (feat. Annabella Wagner, Soul People Music). The Bettini/Orlow Avant-Garde Phase Shortly after arriving in Berlin, a unique crossover project expanded Orlow's musical horizon far beyond traditional club boundaries. He teamed up with the renowned Italian-Swiss avant-garde trumpeter Guy Bettini (a co-founder of Berlin's "Echtzeitmusik" movement). Under the moniker Bettini Orlow (Electro Acoustic Experience), Bettini’s improvised trumpet sounds fused with DJ Orlow’s electronic loops and soundscapes. They performed interdisciplinary live sets alongside dance performance groups (such as Devilangelo) at contemporary art spaces like the Aktionsgalerie Berlin (BerlinBunker). This era gifted Orlow a deep understanding of live improvisation and spatial dynamics. Early Beginnings and the Drum & Bass Era (1995 – 1997) His musical journey began at the age of eight in a choir. Born and raised in Lübeck, Germany, he started DJing in 1995 at the age of 19, organizing his first events at the Club „Bad Taste“ with experimental sounds from Drum & Bass, Trip-Hop, and Downbeat. Between 1999 and 2001, he co-founded the Blue Jet Production series, hosting around 15 events at Berlin venues like Acud, Bastard, and Insel der Jugend, bringing UK Drum & Bass pioneers like Nicky Blackmarket to Germany. Mixing Philosophy To this day, Cem Orlow views DJing as creating an entirely new, continuous composition from existing records. The lessons learned from live avant-garde improvisation in Berlin, paired with the deep balearical vibe of Ibiza, flow seamlessly into his sets. His ultimate goal remains to grant listeners a sense of personal freedom and self-expression on the dancefloor through the hypnotic journey of the mix.
